6th Annual Americana Burlesque & Sideshow Festival

What can I say about this year’s “Americana Burlesque & Sideshow Festival”, but “Wow”! This shoot came up as a last minute gig so I only caught the second act, but it turned out to be great fun. Already looking forward to next year’s ABSFest!

{Re}HAPPENING 2012

Several weeks ago I was once again privileged to document the 3rd annual {Re}HAPPENING at Lake Eden, the site of the historic Black Mountain College. This art incubator is best described as follows:

The {Re}HAPPENING is part art event, part fundraiser and at its root, a community instigator. Bonds between the artists and the historically rich space are created and strengthened throughout the weekend. New collaborations produce work that expands the ability of each individual, combining talents, strengths and ideas in the tradition of BMC.  It is a challenge for artists to balance private time in the studio with public time in collaborative environments.

It’s always a pleasure to work along side these artists in such a rich and inspiring environment. Here are some of my favorite shots from the evening.

“Just Don’t Shoot The Elephants”

Just don’t shoot the elephants” was the only instruction I received on this gig. I might expect “no flash photography”, but no elephants? “It’s in their contract” was all I was told. I never knew elephants had contracts, but I’m sure there’s a lot about the circus I don’t know.

Something else I learned on this shoot is that despite the colors of pretty lights, flashy costumes, and layers of makeup, sometimes the best treatment is a simple monochrome filter. Composition and contrast proved to be the themes for this evening.
