It’s always a welcomed surprise when I shoot an unfamiliar band or musician and end up blown away. Twice in one night is especially rare. Last month I filled in at the Orange Peel to shoot tUnE-yArDs and Mariachi El Bronx. I knew very little about tUnE-yArDs and absolutely nothing about Mariachi El Bronx. Mariachi El Bronx opened up with some serious gusto. Think Calexico with the urban swagger and machismo of Paul Wall. tUnE-yArDs closed out the night with truly refreshing compositions of layered vocal loops and percussion.
