While I’ve seen them perform several times before, Arrested Development never ceases to amaze me and always puts on a fantastic show. The classic hip-hop group from Atlanta, GA played to a packed house at The Orange Peel in downtown Asheville on August 27th. The local opening acts, Zansa and Asheville Horns, aren’t to be overlooked either and certainly did a helluva job to setup Arrested Development for the win.
It’s always a welcomed surprise when I shoot an unfamiliar band or musician and end up blown away. Twice in one night is especially rare. Last month I filled in at the Orange Peel to shoot tUnE-yArDs and Mariachi El Bronx. I knew very little about tUnE-yArDs and absolutely nothing about Mariachi El Bronx. Mariachi El Bronx opened up with some serious gusto. Think Calexico with the urban swagger and machismo of Paul Wall. tUnE-yArDs closed out the night with truly refreshing compositions of layered vocal loops and percussion. What can I say about this year’s “Americana Burlesque & Sideshow Festival”, but “Wow”! This shoot came up as a last minute gig so I only caught the second act, but it turned out to be great fun. Already looking forward to next year’s ABSFest!
